The making of the PIKE Kayak
I built my first concept in
my parents' garage.
One day back in 2016 I got a day off from work to go fishing. I wanted to go somewhere nobody else goes, hoping to discover new fishing spots. Since I didn't own a boat or kayak, I wanted to rent one. That’s when I first felt the impracticality of rental centre business hours – opening 8:00AM, and the most convenient centre was an hour’s drive away. So I thought I would just rent the kayak a day before instead, but then it hit me - where am I going to store it? I live in a 2-room apartment on the 5th floor. Leaving it on the car roof overnight would be unwise, as it might be already elsewhere in the morning. Eventually the problem of inadequate service combined with lack of storage possibility while living in the city bothered me so much that I couldn’t help but think of a solution. I started searching online for foldable kayak solutions that would allow for stand-up fishing, but just couldn't find anything that would satisfy me.
So on Christmas 2016 I built my first concept in my parents' garage.
I created the next version
in summer of 2017.
In Fall 2017 I founded Pike Boy Kayak Ltd.
"With a desire to conquer the world with this folding kayak."
I founded Pike Boy
The company started working on product
improvement and became a finalist of the
“Idea Cup 2018”.
In 2018 the company enrolled into the LIAA Valmiera Business Incubator and started working on product improvement. This lead to the next concept.
2018 was a year of intense work and collaboration with several engineers, resulting in a completely folding kayak concept. This concept received funds from the Valmiera municipality innovation competition. The same year it became a finalist of the “Idea Cup 2018” and won the Riga Courage Grant for further idea development.
Pike Boy Kayak received the LEADER project funding from the
EAFRD and a LIAA voucher for product development.
2019 proved to be both the most difficult and most valuable year for developing the concept. Pike Boy Kayak received the LEADER project funding from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (hereinafter - EAFRD)) and a LIAA voucher for product development by involving scientists from Riga Technical University (Design Factory).
